A man I met yesterday at a programme I am speaking in at Enugu told me a story that got me thinking. It goes thus: 3 men – a Yoruba, an Igbo and a Chinese – went to a restaurant for lunch to celebrate a successful business deal.
As they began eating, a housefly suddenly jumped on the Yoruba man’s food. He screamed hell and and pursued the fly which quickly perched on the Igbo man’s meal. The Igbo man rained curses on the fly and pursued it too. This time, the fly jumped on the Chinese man’s plate and he calmly caught and ate it. The Yoruba man almost threw up while scolding the Chinese for lacking training in hygiene. The Igbo man was quiet. Suddenly another fly appeared and the Yoruba man was the first victim again. He yelled threats at the restaurant management and tried killing the fly which escaped and perched on the Igbo man’s plate. This time, the Igbo man caught it and turning to the Chinese said, ” you don’t need to stress yourself catching the fly this time, I have done it for you. But, HOW MUCH WILL YOU PAY TO HAVE IT?”

Most times, we complain of lack of functional facilities, high cost of items, scarcity of products, sale of fake products, people’s attitudes, etc.
And then we wait and expect THE SITUATION TO CHANGE BY ITSELF OR TO BE CHANGED BY SOME OTHER PERSON! And we keep complaining.
As a student, you complain that your classmates always disturb you by going out severally during classes to buy snacks, recharge cards, pen and sweets. And they just won’t change. SELL THEM THOSE THINGS!
You complain your friends can’t just stop wearing heavy make up. They piss you off. SELL THEM THE MAKE UP since that’s what they want! Business!
There’s no light where you live and you complain that the whole street has to go long distances to buy cold water and drinks. Meanwhile, a medium size generator and freezer have set you in business. Right from your house!
WHEN WE INVEST POSITIVELY IN THE WEAKNESS OF OUR ENVIRONMENT, WE MAKE PROFIT!
Your immediate environment is your MARKET: your classmates, workplace, church, compound, street, etc. Find the weakness and invest.
QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE HOUSEFLY. CATCH IT AND SELL IT TO THE MAN WHO EATS IT! And make profit!
Yes, I CAN!
